As the User Experience (UX/UI) Design Practice Lead at MichiganLabs, you will help define the future of design for our clients. In partnership with clients and users, you will set product strategy, solve complex UX problems, and encourage the team to push past boundaries. You will take time to understand the business problem and design solutions that meet the needs of users while accomplishing business objectives of our clients.  In this role, you will be the main advocate for crafting human-centered experiences, while also balancing what works for businesses and is technically feasible. You will communicate priorities to your practice while creating an environment in which your team members are valued, heard, and supported by adopting future thinking, training opportunities, and tools that foster innovation. 


 WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING as a Design Practice Lead (50%)

  • Setting design strategy for the Practice. Set the design vision for the Practice and company, align everyone, and deliver on it.
  • Set design organization strategy. Define how the design Practice needs to grow to best support our clients. Identify necessary disciplines and specialists. Effectively communicate to the Practice and company how design team growth will support their goals.
  • Make the Practice a great place for designers to work. Have experience in defining the career ladder for designers. Evaluate designers against the career ladder and align, demonstrate their growth path, and align everyone on the difference between steps on that ladder. Mentor and grow individuals, with clear and consistent plans to grow under-performers. Support the team in their career growth. Evangelize the value of design and the individuals on the design team.
  • Collaborate with development, delivery, and other practices to make the right decisions for the Practice and Clients. Balance the needs of engineering, delivery, and other disciplines in decision-making.
  • Work with team members to create and execute personalized growth plans that simultaneously consider a team member’s personal interests and the needs of MichiganLabs. Spend regular one-on-one time being an accountability partner and coach to help the team members follow their personalized growth plan.
  • Cultivate the practice through hiring, promotions, transitions, celebrating, caring for team members, and encouraging others for the benefit of the entire practice.
  • Identify, implement and maintain new standardized systems, processes, and methods for communication, progress, and collaboration amongst the practice while advocating for the autonomy of the team. Consistently consider new solutions and tools to benefit the practice.
  • Stay up to date and  informed on the best practices, innovation and cutting edge advancements of UX Design

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING as a Design Project Lead (50%)

  • User experience vision for projects developed in partnership with our clients and their users, which may include any or all the following outcomes:
    • Synthesis of user research into easy-to-understand recommendations
    • Effective ideation, sketching, and wireframing, sometimes in a collaborative setting
    • High-fidelity designs heavily informed by user needs
    • Designs that adhere to the technical capabilities of the selected platforms (iOS, Android, Angular, Responsive Web, etc)
    • Creating clearly communicated designs and easily exportable assets for the development team to build
    • Interactive click-through prototypes
    • Collaboration with the development team during the development process as design enhancements and changes are needed
    • UI quality assurance
    • Hands-on user testing of beta and production apps and synthesis of results and recommendations
    • Presenting and selling designs appropriately and powerfully to any team member or stakeholder - developers, product owners, or even client executives


  • Experience with proper design project setup, workflow, and design systems
  • Product design background (Figma, Sketch, or Adobe products)
  • Leadership initiative, both internally and with clients and/or management experience 
  • Deep understanding of target users, archetypes, and customer journeys
  • Clear, consistent communication and follow-through when faced with competing priorities
  • Proven ability to manage technical constraints, nail down business value, and pinpoint user needs.
  • Passion for supporting people and helping them grow
